Looking to Hire a Media & Communications Partner? What to Expect on an Introductory Call with Choice

You want to be known to your ideal audience. We want to make you known to those that need to know you exist.

Sounds like a simple start to the love story of a client and publicist partnership, but where do we begin to build that relationship? How do we get there together?

We all want to connect with those that we can serve in our respective businesses. Our team spends time and intention developing our own ideal client, researching and connecting to ultimately how our team could serve a potential client with their media and communications goals. We want to help our clients get from point A to point B faster with a team they trust by their side. As you are looking to hire a media and communications partner, here’s what to expect:

  1. After the initial connection (most often via email!) we invite our potential clients to join us on an introductory Zoom call. Thanks to technology we can meet a client across the country face-to-face from anywhere and truly begin that relationship together. Does a good ‘ol fashion phone call work too? It can and does, but there is something truly magical about face time and we are here for it.

  2. As we begin our conversation, let’s introduce ourselves! Relationships matter to us and we want to get to know each other first and foremost.

  3. We’ll share our goals and intention for the call. With so much vying for our time and attention, we want the ultimate goal to be to leave the call understanding if we are a good fit to work together, and if we would be the right partner to serve you. We have a team-based approach to the work we do at Choice, and even in these beginning stages, we share what is important to us and how we often “say no more than yes” to serving clients. Why would we say that? Because we ultimately want what’s best for your brand or business. Even if that means we aren’t the right fit to serve you. But, let’s go further and see if we are!

  4. Come prepared to talk about your brand or business. Yes, we truly would love to know your life story and how you have poured hours into building your business. As we want to be mindful of time, and as much as we’d love the novel, give us the cliff notes version. Tell us the problem you are solving. Come ready to talk about your upcoming goals for next quarter or the year, and have your top 1-2 priorities ready to share.

  5. The past is important. Finding the right media and communications partner is kind of like dating. So open up the book and be honest! Here are a few questions we often ask during our time together:

    1. How do you want to be positioned to others, or in the media? What makes you and your business differentiated from others in your space?

    2. Have you worked with a PR partner previously? What kind of media experience do you have?

    3. We want to know what you have been doing from a PR/public image that has worked well. What hasn’t worked?

    4. What kind of support do you have internally in your business?

    5. What would a dream win in partnership be with a media and communications agency like Choice?

  6. Ok, so maybe we should call it speed dating, but remember we shared the ultimate goal of our call is to understand if we would be the right partner to serve you. We also want to share why our clients come to work with Choice. Yes, we could dive right into services X, Y, and Z that we offer, but we’ll get to that. Remember, we are building a relationship here! What’s important to us is that we know what’s important to help you meet your goals so we can be the experts to strategically think through how to best serve you in partnership.

  7. Let’s talk about money for a second! In the regular dating world, this conversation may wait til the third or fourth date, but someone has to pay for dinner right? When seeking a partner to provide you with a service, it’s a must to come to the conversation prepared to share a general monthly budget you have in mind to invest in services. This helps us better understand how we can best serve you.

As we wrap up our initial conversation, we want you first and foremost to know we are grateful for your time. We know your schedule is packed running a business and it’s a privilege to spend time together. We often say it’s the best part of our Business Development team’s job to be the first impression of Choice, to dream and brainstorm with potential clients about their goals and how we can make them known.

We want you to know our enthusiasm to share this conversation further with our team and determine the next steps to serve you, as we discuss strategies, tactics, and timelines. Let’s go ahead and make a second date on the calendar to walk through that together! And if we aren’t the right fit or the timing isn’t right, we believe in communicating that as well. We’ll continue to cheer you on in your good work and would love to stay in touch and be a resource for you.

Ready to take the next step and meet with our team? Imagine if you had a partner by your side who could take your business from point A to B faster. Who could take some things off your plate, and bring your clarity to make you known to that audience who would truly be a game changer for your brand?
