How to be a guest on a podcast
So you want to be a guest on a podcast? We are rolling out 10 steps to help you get there. As you work through this guide, keep in mind that it’s important to start small.
Begin with podcasts that have smaller audiences that align with your content. This will help you build credibility while giving you the practice that builds your confidence.
Identify your unique offerings: Clearly define your expertise and the topics you can speak about. This will help you target podcasts that align with your knowledge and interests.
Elevate your online presence: Ensure your online profiles (LinkedIn, personal website, social media) are up-to-date and highlight your expertise. Podcast hosts often research guests before inviting them. (We can help you with this!)
Craft a compelling bio, talking points and suggested interview titles and questions: Develop a concise and engaging bio that showcases your expertise, experience, and why you would be an interesting guest for a podcast. You can see examples of this HERE.
Research podcasts and build your lists: Identify podcasts that cater to your niche. Look for shows that align with your expertise and have an audience that would benefit from your insights. Use websites like Chartable to help you see how many people you can reach and if they are the right audience for you.
Listen to episodes: Familiarize yourself with the podcasts you're interested in by listening to a few episodes. This will help you understand the tone, format and types of questions asked.
Find contact information: Look for contact information on the podcast's website or social media profiles. If it's not readily available, try reaching out through a general email or social media message. A lot of podcasts use contact forms, be prepared to share your contact information, why you be an ideal guest for the show and your headshot.
Craft a personalized pitch: Write a personalized pitch that explains who you are, why you're a great fit for their audience and what unique perspective or insights you can bring to the show.
Highlight your experience and offer value to their audience: Mention any relevant experience you have, such as previous podcast appearances, articles or speaking engagements. This helps build credibility. Clearly articulate how your presence will benefit the podcast and its audience. What unique insights or perspectives can you offer?
Follow-up: If you don't receive a response after your initial pitch, send a polite follow-up email or message. Sometimes, hosts get a high volume of requests, and a gentle reminder can be effective.
Share on social media: Once the episode is live, actively promote it on your social media channels and other platforms. This will help the podcast and increase your visibility.
